What OverTheCounter medicine can i take for allergies/cold while i’m breastfeeding my baby?
I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old Infant only during the night (between 10pm to 7am) is there any thing i can take over the counter for my allergies or cold/flu like symptoms?
At my 6-week postpartum check-up I asked my OBGYN what I could take for allergies if they got very severe last summer. I was told that Benadryl is safe, but it may make the baby drowsy. He also said Zyrtec would be okay. And saline nasal sprays can be used, too. Tylenol is considered safe, as is ibuprofen, and those would both help with headache and inflamed sinuses, though they won’t stop allergies. Those are the only things I know are okay, but I would definitely check with your doctor. Personally I feel like even if they say it’s safe today, tomorrow they may discover it isn’t. (Remember, years ago they said that alcohol couldn’t cross the placenta!) So I do my best not to take anything whenever possible. The risk to the baby will be less if you are nursing only overnight versus round-the-clock, but you still can’t be sure how much of the medicine the baby will get.
